The Central Government has sanctioned a major financial package to support the protection and regeneration of the rare Red Sanders (Red Sandalwood) trees in Andhra Pradesh. The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has approved ₹39.84 crore for the state under its Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) mechanism.

Of the total amount, ₹38.36 crore has been allocated to the Forest Department, while ₹1.48 crore has been earmarked for the Andhra Pradesh State Biodiversity Board.

Red Sanders, known globally for their high value and medicinal properties, naturally grow only in the eastern hill ranges of Anantapur, Chittoor, Kadapa, Prakasam, and Kurnool districts.

The funds originate from revenue generated after the government cracked down on Red Sanders smuggling. Confiscated logs were auctioned, bringing in ₹87.68 crore. Under the ABS policy - which ensures that benefits from biological resources are shared - the NBA has now redirected a portion of that revenue back to the state specifically for conservation efforts.

The Forest Department plans to use its share to:

• Strengthen facilities and equipment for frontline forest staff

• Improve security measures in Red Sanders-rich forest areas

• Promote scientific management and regeneration of Red Sanders forests

• Support local communities through Biodiversity Management Committees

• Enhance monitoring systems to track the growth and health of the species

The State Biodiversity Board will use its allocation to raise one lakh Red Sanders saplings, which will later be supplied to farmers. This initiative aims to promote cultivation outside forest areas and ensure long-term survival of the species.

Until now, more than 216 farmers across Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have already benefited from over ₹3 crore distributed by the NBA for Red Sanders conservation efforts.

The newly released funds are expected to further strengthen community participation, provide livelihood opportunities, and boost scientific conservation.
