Navy Ship Sagar Docks In Yangon, Boosts India-Myanmar Maritime Engagement
The Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar, INS Sunayna , arrived at Yangon Harbour on May 4 as part of India’s continued maritime outreach in the region, the Ministry of Defence said.
INS Sunayna , an offshore patrol vessel of the Indian Navy, is equipped for surveillance, anti-piracy operations, search and rescue, and broader maritime security missions. The vessel has been actively deployed across the Indian Ocean Region for humanitarian assistance and capacity-building initiatives with partner countries.
The visit coincides with the trip of Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, underlining efforts to strengthen bilateral maritime cooperation between India and Myanmar.
The port call began with a ceremonial welcome by the Myanmar Navy and will include a range of professional and cultural engagements. Planned activities feature interactions between naval personnel, visits to Myanmar Navy training establishments, and friendly sports fixtures aimed at enhancing operational understanding and camaraderie.
India and Myanmar share steadily expanding maritime ties, driven by their strategic location in the Bay of Bengal and shared priorities of ensuring regional stability and security. Naval cooperation between the two countries has grown through coordinated patrols, training exchanges, port visits, and humanitarian assistance efforts.
Myanmar remains a key partner in India’s efforts to strengthen connectivity and security architecture in the eastern Indian Ocean, with maritime engagement forming a crucial pillar of the relationship.
The deployment of IOS Sagar is aligned with India’s MAHASAGAR vision Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across Regions reflecting the Indian Navy’s commitment to cooperative engagement in the region.
The visit also supports India’s Neighbourhood First policy , aimed at deepening ties with neighbouring countries through sustained diplomatic and defence cooperation.
