Navjot Kaur Sidhu Suspended by Congress Following Controversial CM Remark
The Punjab Congress plunged into turmoil after Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of former state party chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, was suspended from the party’s primary membership for alleging that only someone who brings a “₹500-crore suitcase” can become the Chief Minister. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring announced the suspension on Monday evening, describing her statement as unacceptable and contrary to party discipline. The political storm began when Navjot Kaur Sidhu, after meeting Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on issues related to deteriorating law and order, told reporters that their family could not pay ₹500 crore for the CM’s post, even though they were capable of transforming Punjab into a “golden state.” She further said that her husband would return to active politics if any party projected him as its chief ministerial face for the 2027 elections, while accusing factions within the Punjab Congress of blocking his rise by promoting multiple competing CM aspirants within the party.
Her remark triggered strong reactions across the political spectrum. The Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party seized upon her allegation, claiming it exposed deep-rooted “suitcase politics” within the Congress. Senior AAP leaders, including finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema, intensified their attack by suggesting that if the CM’s chair truly costs ₹500 crore, then previous governments governed through massive corruption, causing huge losses to the state. The controversy provided fresh ammunition to AAP at a time when early political maneuvering for the 2027 Assembly elections has already begun.
Caught in the backlash, the Punjab Congress moved swiftly to control the damage by distancing itself from her comments and reiterating that her remarks were personal and not reflective of the party’s stance. Raja Warring emphasized that no individual is above party discipline, and the suspension reinforced the ongoing tension between the Sidhu camp and the current state leadership, a friction that has surfaced multiple times since Sidhu’s resignation following the 2022 election defeat.
Following the uproar, Navjot Kaur Sidhu issued a clarification on social media, saying her statement was misunderstood and that the Congress had never asked them for money. She insisted she merely meant that they personally did not have such funds, while stressing that both she and her husband always spoke in the interest of Punjab. The episode also drew reactions from outside Punjab, including a sharp attack from Karnataka deputy chief minister D.K. Shivakumar, who criticised her statement harshly a sign of how widely the controversy had spread.
The incident revived discussion about Navjot Singh Sidhu’s uncertain political trajectory. After beginning his political career with the BJP in 2004, switching to the Congress in 2017, leading the state unit briefly, and losing his seat in 2022, speculation continues about whether he might seek a political comeback through another party or renewed negotiations within the Congress. Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s explosive comment and her subsequent suspension have deepened the rift within the Punjab Congress, while simultaneously giving opponents an opportunity to attack the party as divided and susceptible to allegations of money-driven politics. As Punjab slowly moves toward the 2027 elections, the repercussions of this controversy are expected to linger, influencing party equations, leadership projections, and political narratives in the months ahead.
