Nationwide Buzz: Govt Rolls Out Real-Time Emergency Warning System

Mobile phones across India buzzed on Saturday as the Centre rolled out a Cell Broadcast Alert System aimed at delivering instant warnings during emergencies and natural disasters . The loud notification, received by millions, was part of a nationwide test conducted alongside the official launch by Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

The government had issued a prior advisory on April 29, urging citizens not to panic and to ignore the test alert , which read: “Extremely Severe Alert… This is a test message.” The exercise was carried out across telecom networks in most regions, excluding poll-bound states.

According to an official statement, the system has been developed indigenously by Centre for Development of Telematics in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority under the guidance of Home Minister Amit Shah. It aims to strengthen India’s disaster preparedness by ensuring real-time communication of critical information .

Unlike traditional SMS-based alerts, the Cell Broadcast (CB) technology allows messages to be sent simultaneously to all mobile devices within a specific geographic area , even during network congestion. The system works without requiring internet access or mobile applications, making it highly reliable during crises .

The alert platform is based on the Common Alerting Protocol recommended by the International Telecommunication Union and is currently operational across all 36 States and Union Territories.

Officials said the primary objective is to address delays seen in conventional warning systems and to respond effectively to the rising frequency of disasters such as cyclones, floods and earthquakes. By enabling geo-targeted, near real-time alerts , authorities expect the system to play a crucial role in reducing casualties and enhancing public safety.

The initiative marks a significant step towards building a more resilient and responsive disaster management framework in the country.
