Nations League Drama: Ronaldo Walkout, Zidane Return and a Wave of Injuries Shake Europe
European international football hardly looked like it was taking a breather after the World Cup, with the latest Nations League window producing drama on and off the pitch.
The biggest storyline was Cristiano Ronaldo’s increasingly uncertain future with Portugal. After more than 23 years, 234 appearances and 146 goals, the 41-year-old superstar walked out of the squad following a dispute with new coach Jorge Jesus over playing time.
Portugal, however, won all three matches without Ronaldo, while replacement Gonçalo Ramos scored three goals, adding another twist to a saga that could mark the end of an extraordinary international career.
The two-game series between Israel and Ireland was equally tense. Played in neutral Hungary and Serbia amid deep political tensions, the matches featured black armbands, refused handshakes and Ireland players bowing their heads during the Israeli anthem. UEFA is also investigating an allegation that an Israel player spat at an Ireland coach.
At the same time, Zinedine Zidane made an impressive return to management after five years away, guiding France to three wins and a draw. Germany's new coach Jurgen Klopp, by contrast, endured a more difficult start as he experimented with different squads.
The packed schedule also took a heavy toll. Kylian Mbappe, Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo, Ferran Torres and Alex Scott were among those affected by injuries, while Erling Haaland also appeared fatigued.
Italy offered another intriguing subplot. Under Roberto Mancini, back for a second spell, Italy won two games and drew against France after missing a third successive World Cup.
World champions Spain remained the benchmark, winning all four matches and extending their unbeaten run to around 2½ years, with Lamine Yamal continuing to underline his status as one of Europe's brightest stars.
