What began as an expedition voyage across the Atlantic has now turned into a carefully coordinated international medical emergency . The cruise ship MV Hondius , carrying passengers from over 20 countries, arrived off the coast of Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands on Sunday after a deadly hantavirus outbreak left three people dead and several others infected.

The first evacuation flight carrying Spanish nationals departed for Madrid, where passengers will be placed under strict quarantine and monitored at a military hospital. Spanish authorities confirmed that none of the remaining passengers currently show symptoms, but global health agencies are treating the situation with extreme caution.

At the port of Granadilla in Tenerife, the evacuation looked more like a biohazard operation than a tourist disembarkation. Health workers in hazmat suits, respirators, and face masks escorted passengers off the ship one by one. Travelers were allowed to carry only essential items, while luggage remained onboard to prevent possible contamination.

The outbreak has drawn worldwide attention because the virus involved is believed to be the Andes strain of hantavirus , a rare version that may spread between humans under limited circumstances. Normally, hantavirus spreads through contact with contaminated rodent waste and is not considered highly transmissible between people.

Countries including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Norway, and Australia have launched emergency evacuation and quarantine plans for their citizens. American passengers are expected to undergo isolation in Nebraska, while British and French travelers will remain under medical observation after returning home.

The World Health Organization is directly overseeing the operation alongside Spanish officials. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was present in Tenerife to monitor the evacuation process.

Meanwhile, concern has spread beyond the ship itself. On the remote British territory of Tristan da Cunha , military medics were parachuted in after a former passenger developed suspected symptoms linked to the virus.

The MV Hondius will now continue to Rotterdam in the Netherlands for full disinfection, marking the end of a voyage that has rapidly become one of the most alarming maritime health crises in recent years.
