National-level surfing championship at Butler Bay, Andaman from April 9 to 12

The pristine shores of Butler Bay in Little Andaman are all set to welcome India’s top surfers as the national-level surfing championship takes off from April 9 to 12 . Organised for the first time on such a scale by the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration in partnership with the Surfing Federation of India, the event is generating excitement across the surfing community.

Butler Bay, located roughly 130 km south of Sri Vijaya Puram , is renowned for its long, clean reef-break waves , ideal for high-performance surfing . Unlike conventional mainland beach breaks, its conditions allow athletes to perform technical manoeuvres and enjoy extended rides , making it the perfect venue for a competition of this magnitude.

Vinayak Chamadia, Director of Information, Publicity and Tourism (IP&T), highlighted the significance of the championship: “This event comes months before India’s debut in surfing at the Asian Games 2026 . It is not only a competition but also a platform to showcase the Andaman Islands as an emerging hub for surfing and ocean sports.”

The championship will feature senior divisions in surfing and Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) , drawing top talent from across the country. Beyond the thrill of competition, organisers hope to promote local participation, environmental awareness, and responsible tourism, aligning with the islands’ conservation goals.

“This is a landmark moment for Little Andaman,” Chamadia added. “Hosting a national-scale event here helps place the destination on the global surfing and adventure tourism map, while giving athletes a world-class stage to shine.”
