National AI Skilling Initiative Crosses 60,000 Enrolments in Phase I

India’s National AI Skilling Initiative has recorded 60,253 enrolments in its first phase, signalling strong interest in building foundational artificial intelligence capabilities among students and learners.

The figures were shared by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L. Murugan in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Of the enrolled participants, 4,620 have completed two modules, while 552 have completed all four modules offered under Phase I.

The first phase spans 33 hours across four modules, delivered through two learning platforms. The programme begins with “AI Essentials”, which focuses on using AI to improve productivity, synthesise data and create content. The second module, “Prompting Essentials”, teaches participants frameworks for writing effective professional prompts.

The remaining two modules focus on generative AI. “Introduction to Generative AI” covers large language model (LLM) fundamentals and responsible AI practices, while “Generative AI Leader” addresses workflow automation and the strategic use of generative AI for organisational transformation.

It bridges learning with workplace needs.

The initiative reflects a broader push to make AI skills more accessible and relevant to the evolving workplace. Rather than focusing only on technical concepts, the curriculum combines practical applications, responsible AI awareness and workplace-oriented skills, potentially helping learners adapt to AI-enabled roles across sectors.

The curriculum has been jointly designed and developed by the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) and private-sector partners. The advanced skilling component is being conducted by IICT and includes joint certification.

The government’s role has been to provide strategic direction and facilitate implementation through IICT, with the stated objective of improving AI literacy and industry-relevant digital skills.

Details of Phase II, including its curriculum, modules and duration, are still being finalised. The next stage could expand the initiative’s reach while building on the foundational skills introduced in Phase I.

With enrolments already crossing 60,000, the programme highlights the growing importance of structured AI education as India seeks to prepare its student population for an increasingly AI-driven economy.
