As the country marks the 649th birth anniversary of Sant Guru Ravidas Ji , his enduring legacy as a saint-poet and social reformer continues to resonate across generations, reinforcing the values of equality, compassion, and human dignity in Indian society.

Born in the 15th century in Seer Govardhanpur near Varanasi , Sant Guru Ravidas Ji lived during a period characterised by deep social divisions and rigid caste hierarchies. Through his spiritual teachings and personal example, he emerged as a powerful voice against discrimination, advocating a society grounded in justice, humility, and moral integrity.

Sant Ravidas Ji emphasised that devotion to God transcends ritual, caste, and social status , and that true spirituality is reflected in ethical conduct and service to humanity. Central to his philosophy was the belief in the oneness of humankind , with all individuals equal before the divine. His teachings consistently urged people to rise above prejudice and live in harmony.

One of his most influential ideas was the vision of “Begumpura” , an ideal society free from sorrow, fear, inequality, and exploitation, where all citizens live with dignity and security. This concept remains a powerful symbol of social justice and inclusive governance.

A key figure of the Bhakti movement , Sant Guru Ravidas Ji composed devotional verses in simple and accessible language, enabling spiritual thought to reach the common people. Several of his hymns find a place in the Guru Granth Sahib , underscoring his significant contribution to India’s spiritual and philosophical traditions.

His teachings continue to inspire millions, particularly followers of the Ravidasia community , who carry forward his message of equality, peaceful coexistence, and social reform. Institutions and places of worship dedicated to him function not only as spiritual centres but also as platforms for social upliftment.

In contemporary times, when challenges of inequality and social division persist, Sant Guru Ravidas Ji’s message retains deep relevance. His life and teachings serve as a reminder that the pursuit of a just, inclusive, and compassionate society remains a shared national responsibility.
