The civic bodies of Nashik and Malegaon on Friday directed all slaughterhouses and meat shops to remain closed on Republic Day, officials said. The order prohibits the slaughter of animals on January 26 and applies to establishments dealing in buffalo-class meat, chicken and goat meat.

The decision was taken in line with guidance from the Union and Maharashtra governments and in view of maintaining communal harmony, public peace and sensitivity on the national holiday. Authorities warned that strict action would be initiated against violators.

Any breach of the directive will invite action under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including cancellation of licences and imposition of fines. The Nashik Municipal Corporation said slaughterhouses will remain shut on 12 designated days during 2026.
