Naomi Osaka produced one of the biggest upsets of Wimbledon 2026 , defeating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) in a thrilling fourth round clash on Sunday to book her place in the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in her career.

In a contest featuring two of the most powerful hitters in women's tennis, it was Osaka who dictated the pace from the very beginning. The four time Grand Slam champion unleashed a barrage of flat, penetrating groundstrokes that repeatedly troubled Sabalenka, preventing the Belarusian from settling into her rhythm.

The victory was particularly significant for Osaka, who had lost all three of her meetings against Sabalenka earlier this year, including a defeat at the same stage of the French Open . This time, however, the Japanese star turned the tables with an aggressive display that showcased both precision and confidence.

Played under unusually warm conditions, with temperatures on Centre Court climbing to 28 degrees Celsius , the fast court only enhanced Osaka's attacking style. Her clean ball striking and powerful returns consistently kept Sabalenka on the back foot, especially during a dominant opening set that Osaka wrapped up in just 6-2.

Sabalenka mounted a stronger challenge in the second set, forcing a tense tie break, but Osaka remained composed when it mattered most. She raised her level in the decisive moments to seal the tie break 7-2 and complete a memorable straight sets victory.

The triumph marks Osaka's first win over a World No. 1 player since defeating Ash Barty in Beijing in 2019 , a reminder of the elite level she is capable of reaching.

After stepping away from tennis in recent years to focus on her mental health and later taking maternity leave , which kept her off the tour throughout 2023 , Osaka's remarkable resurgence has gathered momentum. Her latest victory not only sends her into the last eight at Wimbledon for the first time but also signals that the former World No. 1 is once again a serious contender on the biggest stage.
