Naomi Osaka Exits US Open After Another Swaggy Fashion Statement

Naomi Osaka’s U.S. Open campaign ended in disappointment on Monday, but the four-time Grand Slam champion ensured her final appearance at the tournament was still a memorable one with another bold fashion statement.

The 28-year-old Osaka suffered a one-sided fourth-round defeat to Elena Rybakina, with leg pain also hampering her during the match. Yet, even as her title hopes ended, Osaka continued to command attention away from the court with a series of eye-catching outfits that established her as one of tennis’ most distinctive fashion figures.

For her final walk onto the court, Osaka wore a colourful, fur-trimmed cloak by Brooklyn-based label KidSuper, designed by Colm Dillane. The outfit was completed by a headband inspired by the blue, red and white NBA logo, redesigned to feature a tennis player holding a racket.

“I felt really swaggy when I put it on,” Osaka said after the match, adding that the look captured the spirit of New York.

Osaka’s fashion choices at this year’s U.S. Open followed a basketball-inspired theme, reflecting Nike’s celebration of the New York Knicks’ championship success. She worked with celebrity stylist Law Roach, known for his collaborations with stars including Zendaya, to create the dramatic looks.

Her first-round outfit drew inspiration from NBA great Allen Iverson, featuring a long white tulle skirt and grey hooded robe from New York streetwear label Who Decides War. For the second round, she wore a Thom Browne ensemble featuring crossed tennis-racket embroidery and a mesh tennis skirt resembling a basketball net. Her third-round look, by Monse, blended an oversized suit jacket and hoodie with flowing fleece pants.

Despite her early exit, Osaka remained philosophical about her campaign and the prospect of missing future fashion reveals.

“I feel like that's a way that I can have fun and sort of just excite myself,” she said.

Reflecting on her career, Osaka added that she had no regrets, saying another Grand Slam title would not change her life.
