Three generations of the Akkineni family have come together for the latest Variety India cover, with Nagarjuna Akkineni, Naga Chaitanya and Akhil Akkineni reflecting on their family's nearly 90-year cinematic journey, the pressures of carrying a famous surname and their plans for the future of Indian cinema.

The feature, titled ‘Guardians Of The Silver Screen’, examines how the legacy established by legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) continues through his son and grandsons. Nagarjuna said the family's connection with cinema is not merely about acting but also about creating opportunities through Annapurna Studios, which ANR established as a way of giving back to the industry.

Nagarjuna also recalled the pressure he faced after entering the industry as ANR's son. With his father having already completed around 250 films, expectations were enormous. He said it took him roughly 25 to 30 films to establish an identity of his own.

The younger generation spoke candidly about similar expectations. Akhil acknowledged that he and Chaitanya are effectively “poster children of nepotism”, but said they prefer to focus on the opportunities and advantages their family background has given them while accepting the accompanying scrutiny. He also stressed his desire to contribute to Annapurna Studios as a producer and eventually make content-driven films with emerging filmmakers.

For Chaitanya, the family legacy is about learning from the previous generations while developing an individual identity. He has also spoken about expanding his work beyond established boundaries while remaining connected to his roots and Annapurna Studios.

The trio discussed their personal and professional dynamics as well. Nagarjuna said he generally allows his sons to make their own creative decisions, while Akhil recalled how family members have traditionally kept professional discussions away from family time.

The feature comes at an important stage in their careers. Nagarjuna is preparing for his 100th film, while Chaitanya has ‘Vrushakarma’ in the pipeline. Akhil, meanwhile, recently returned with ‘Lenin’, marking an important phase after a prolonged break caused by a hand injury and recovery.

The Akkineni trio's Variety India appearance ultimately underlines a shared philosophy: legacy may open doors, but sustaining it requires individuality, resilience and a continued commitment to cinema.
