Nagaphani Sharma: A pride for the Telugu language, says Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka

Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka praised Madgula Nagaphani Sharma, Padma Shri awardee and celebrated literary figure, calling him a “great treasure” for the Telugu language. The remarks were made during a felicitation ceremony held at Ravindra Bharati on Monday in honor of Nagaphani Sharma, who is renowned for his expertise in Dvishatavadhanam and Sahasravadhanam.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy CM highlighted the courage needed to engage with scholars of Nagaphani Sharma’s caliber. He recalled that even former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao had participated in an Avadhanam performance and personally lauded Sharma’s skills. Bhatti Vikramarka emphasized that the Avadhanam tradition enhances memory, concentration, and mental agility and should be taught from a young age. He noted that this unique literary practice, primarily found in Telugu and Sanskrit, is a source of pride for the community and encouraged its introduction to the wider public. He also pointed out that Avadhanam requires awareness of contemporary topics, mentioning that Sharma has even performed Avadhanam on subjects like cricket.

The Deputy CM also reflected on Nagaphani Sharma’s early life, noting that he overcame many hardships. Growing up in Tirupati without electricity, he studied under scholars like Nalla Narasimha Charya, Nanduri Ramakrishna Charya, and Ramasharma Pandit, often using a kerosene lamp for light. Rising from humble beginnings in a village, Sharma became an internationally recognized Avadhani, earning the Padma Shri award for his contributions.

Bhatti Vikramarka urged people to preserve the Telugu language and ensure that the Avadhanam tradition continues to thrive. He suggested setting up centers in Hyderabad to teach students the intricate art of Avadhanam, making it accessible to the next generation. Leaders from various political parties attended the ceremony to honor Sharma’s achievements.
