Nagaland Floods, Landslides Kill 9, Four Missing as Rescue Operations Continue

Nagaland is battling widespread disruption caused by incessant rainfall, flash floods and landslides, with the death toll in Mon district rising to nine and four people still missing, according to the state disaster management authorities.

The situation is particularly severe in Mon, where landslides have claimed nine lives, including five fatalities in Shantham Ward of Mon Town. Four people who were swept away by flash floods in Naginimora have been rescued. One of the survivors suffered fractures, while three others sustained minor injuries.

Search and rescue operations are continuing for the four people reported missing. Teams from the state disaster management authorities, district administration, police and other emergency agencies have been deployed to affected areas, while efforts are also underway to evacuate vulnerable residents and restore essential services.

The widespread rainfall has affected at least 7,460 people across Nagaland, with Shamator among the worst-hit districts. Nearly 7,000 residents across six villages in the district have reportedly been affected by landslides. Tuensang has also reported damage across 12 villages, impacting 201 people, while landslides have affected around 30 villages in Zunheboto.

Preliminary assessments indicate that 64 houses across 93 villages in 10 districts have been damaged. Several roads and public utilities have also been affected, disrupting transportation and normal life in many areas. The disaster has additionally caused significant livestock losses, with at least 83 animals, including 15 mithuns, 13 cattle and 53 pigs, reported dead.

Authorities have cautioned that the scale of destruction could increase as detailed assessments continue in the affected districts. With rainfall continuing in parts of the state, residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to remain alert and follow official safety advisories.

The government has also announced financial assistance for the families of those killed and for injured survivors, as relief, rescue and restoration efforts continue across the flood- and landslide-hit areas.
