Naga Vamsi Reveals Why He's Called 'Chimtu', But Netizens Offer a Different Origin

Producer Naga Vamsi has become one of Telugu cinema's most talked about personalities, not just for backing blockbuster films but also for his outspoken interviews and viral public appearances. While fans affectionately call him "Chimtu Anna" or simply "Chimtu," many still wonder how the viral nickname came into existence.

The question resurfaced after the audio launch of Suriya's upcoming film Vishwanath & Sons in Coimbatore, where both Suriya and Naga Vamsi delivered speeches that quickly became the talk of social media.

Speaking at the event, Suriya highlighted the film's emotional core and why its message is relevant today. " Love is important. Love can heal people. Love can change families. Love can change society, " the actor said, adding that the film carries a heartfelt message. He urged everyone to spread more love and kindness, expressing confidence that audiences would connect with the emotions of Vishwanath & Sons.

Taking the stage later, Naga Vamsi thanked Suriya for placing his faith in the project. He said the actor trusted two young filmmakers from the Telugu industry right from the narration stage and never doubted the film. Vamsi also revealed that he had been assuring Suriya's fans from day one that they would once again get to witness the iconic Sanjay Ramasamy on screen.

Clarifying his earlier comments comparing the film with Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, Vamsi said he was not being arrogant or comparing the two films. " Every producer believes in their own film. With the same confidence, I believe Vishwanath & Sons will become our Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo in Tamil, " he said.

His remarks instantly went viral, with social media once again flooded with posts calling him "Chimtu Anna." At the same time, many users unfamiliar with the nickname began asking why the producer is called "Chimtu."

As the discussion gained momentum, Telugu meme pages and longtime social media users stepped in to explain the story behind the viral tag. According to many of them, the nickname traces back to the globally popular Kabosu (Doge) memes. When those memes found a huge following among Telugu meme pages, the Doge character became popularly known as "Chimtu." The phrase "Attitude Chimtu" later emerged as a meme template used for people who come across as bold, overconfident or carefree.

Many users explained that Naga Vamsi's blunt, confident and unapologetic interview style perfectly matched the "Attitude Chimtu" meme, leading meme creators to associate the nickname with him. While it may have started as a humorous social media tag, fans gradually embraced it with affection, and today "Chimtu Anna" is widely seen as a term of endearment rather than an insult.

Several users also pointed out that Telugu audiences often coin unique nicknames for celebrities they adore. They compared "Chimtu" with Allu Arjun's "BhAAi," Nagarjuna's "Nag Mama," and Akhil Akkineni's "Ayyagaru," saying these fan created names reflect affection and a special bond with their favourite personalities. What began as a meme has now evolved into one of the most recognizable fan tags associated with Naga Vamsi.

Interestingly, even celebrities have embraced the nickname. In the promotional video announcing Ravi Teja's Mass Jathara release date, the actor playfully addressed the producer as "Chimtu." Likewise, Nagarjuna Akkineni recently referred to him as "Chimtu Anna" during the Lenin pre-release event, further cementing the nickname's place in Telugu cinema culture.

Directed by Venky Atluri, Vishwanath & Sons stars Suriya and Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles, with music composed by GV Prakash Kumar. The bilingual entertainer is scheduled to release in Telugu and Tamil on August 14, 2026.
