Mysuru Dasara Blends Royal Heritage with Modern Spectacles
Mysuru’s 417th Dasara celebrations are blending Karnataka’s royal heritage, religious traditions and modern attractions, drawing residents and visitors to the city for the 11-day festival from October 11 to 21.
Dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari, the festival celebrates the victory of good over evil. The city has illuminated 199 roads and 123 circles, while Mysuru Palace remains a major attraction with its dazzling evening illumination. A drone show featuring 3,400 drones reportedly forming a dancing peacock has added a modern spectacle to the festivities, although the record claim could not be independently verified.
One of this year’s major additions is Kambala, the traditional buffalo race associated with coastal Karnataka, which has been introduced into Mysuru Dasara for the first time. District Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah expressed hope that the sport would gain international recognition.
The celebrations also feature torchlight parades, cultural programmes, a flower show at Kuppanna Park and the Aahara Mela, or food festival, at Maharaja’s College Grounds. An Indian Air Force aerobatic display by the Surya Kiran team attracted crowds, but unfavourable weather forced the team to shorten its October 18 performance.
The Vijayadashami procession, or Jamboo Savari, on October 21, will be the festival’s grand finale. The procession will feature Goddess Chamundeshwari’s deity in the golden howdah, accompanied by decorated elephants, folk performers and colourful tableaux.
This year’s tableaux will showcase Karnataka’s culinary heritage, scientific achievements and industrial history, including Mysuru Pak, Mysuru masala dosa, the Indian Institute of Science and Hindustan Machine Tools. A record 11 central government agencies are expected to participate.
The celebrations reflect Mysuru’s effort to preserve its cultural identity while embracing contemporary attractions. The torchlight parade and drone show are also scheduled as part of the concluding festivities.
