Elon Musk has pitched Starlink’s satellite internet service as a potential solution to India’s rural and underserved connectivity gaps, saying the technology could particularly benefit remote parts of the country.

“Starlink would help the least served in India, especially in rural areas,” Musk said in a social media post on Wednesday. He was responding to a post by X account DogeDesigner, which highlighted the lack of high-speed connectivity in thousands of Indian villages and called for Starlink Services to be made available in the country.

According to the post, 11,256 listed villages still lacked 4G coverage as of May 2026. It also cited March 2026 data showing that India had 1.093 billion internet subscriptions, of which 440.87 million were in rural areas.

The disparity in connectivity remains significant. Rural internet subscription density stood at 48.31 subscriptions per 100 people, compared with 126.80 per 100 people in urban India, indicating a substantial digital divide despite India’s rapid expansion of telecom infrastructure.

Musk’s comments come amid reports that Starlink has submitted a fresh application seeking approval to provide satellite communication services in India. The company has been pursuing regulatory clearances for several years as it prepares to enter one of the world’s largest telecom markets.

An earlier application involving Starlink’s Gen 2 satellite network was rejected by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe). The rejection reportedly related to certain system features and the radio frequencies proposed by Starlink, which did not meet Indian requirements.

Starlink’s Gen 2 network also includes direct-to-device connectivity, potentially allowing satellites to connect directly with compatible devices.

Operated by SpaceX, Starlink uses a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites to deliver broadband internet. Its proposed entry into India could strengthen connectivity in remote locations where conventional terrestrial networks remain difficult or expensive to deploy.
