Municipal Polls: Congress Aims to Break BRS Hold in Nizamabad

As municipal elections in Telangana draw near, political activity has intensified across urban local bodies, particularly in Nizamabad Municipal Corporation , where the ruling Congress party has unveiled an aggressive election strategy targeting more than 70 per cent of the seats . Party leaders are projecting significant gains based on recent welfare-driven governance and a perceived pro-incumbency wave in urban areas.

In a high-level review meeting held at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad , senior Congress functionaries, potential candidates, and constituency in-charges assessed the party’s readiness and outlined plans for campaigning. Congress leaders believe that the party’s performance in the recent panchayat elections — where it secured approximately 73 per cent of the seats — indicates a favourable political climate that can be translated into similar success in municipal polls.

Senior party leader Mohammad Ali Shabbir highlighted the impact of several welfare initiatives, including expanded ration card distribution in urban areas, the construction of Indiramma houses , and the provision of 200 units of free electricity for the poor , including residents of minority bastis, as key factors influencing voter sentiment. He said these measures have strengthened the party’s appeal, especially among urban voters.

Congress state president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud described the review meeting as productive, noting that the party had gathered feedback from aspirants and leaders across constituencies. He emphasised the importance of coordinated campaigning and collective effort to achieve the targeted majority.

To further bolster preparations, the party has appointed ministers and senior leaders as in-charges for different Lok Sabha constituencies, including N. Uttam Kumar Reddy for Nizamabad, to oversee planning, candidate selection, and grassroots mobilisation. These coordinators are tasked with ensuring disciplined campaigning and avoiding internal conflicts, especially following concerns about rebel activity in local contests.

The municipal election preparations are in full swing across Telangana, with the State Election Commission (SEC) expected to issue the official poll schedule, possibly around January 24 or 27 , after completion of necessary formalities. The state cabinet has directed officials to complete arrangements well ahead of February , taking into account festivals like Maha Shivaratri and Ramzan to minimise inconvenience to voters.

Nizamabad Municipal Corporation consists of 60 wards . It is currently led by a BRS mayor , with support from AIMIM and independent members forming the majority, while the BJP holds a significant opposition presence. Congress’s strategy is focused not only on securing a majority but also on capturing the mayor’s chair by outperforming rival parties in key wards.

Beyond Nizamabad, Congress is actively preparing for elections in 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations statewide, a set of civic polls that many political analysts view as a semi-final test ahead of larger electoral battles.
