A girder bridge parapet slab under construction on Mumbai Metro Line–4 collapsed on Saturday afternoon in Mulund , killing one person and injuring three others, police and municipal officials said. The incident occurred near the Johnson & Johnson factory on LBS Road shortly after noon. The fallen slab struck an autorickshaw and a Skoda car , causing significant damage.

The deceased has been identified as Ramdhan Yadav , while the injured include Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav (45) , Mahendra Pratap Yadav (52) , and Deepa Ruhia (40) . Rajkumar is in critical condition and receiving ICU care, while the others are reported stable. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said the collapse occurred at 12:15 PM near Pier No. 196 , close to the Mulund Fire Station. The Metro project team, along with BMC and disaster management authorities, carried out immediate relief measures. The exact cause of the accident is under investigation. Metro Line–4 is under construction from Wadala to Thane , passing through Vikhroli, Bhandup, and Mulund along LBS Road.

Opposition parties sharply criticised the state government. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray recalled that Metro Line–3 had been submerged by heavy rains after its launch and questioned whether the contractor would be blacklisted. He alleged that pillars were being painted before work completion, adding unnecessary financial burden, and accused authorities of neglecting safety. Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad asked if the lives of Mumbai citizens have become so cheap, urging prioritisation of public safety over infrastructure promotion and demanding strict action against the responsible parties.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde expressed outrage, calling the incident “gross negligence.” She visited the site near the Johnson & Johnson facility, stating, “The parapet was installed just yesterday. Were safety protocols followed? Traffic underneath should have been temporarily halted.” She confirmed the injured are receiving treatment and one person has died.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed shock, ordered an immediate inquiry, and announced ₹5 lakh financial assistance for the deceased’s family. The state will cover medical expenses for the injured. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has been briefed and will ensure appropriate action. Deputy Mayor Sanjay Ghadi confirmed four people were injured, with two in critical condition, and assured legal action against those at fault.
