Mumbai Ghatkopar Landslide: 7 Dead, 7 Injured as Hillside Collapses on Homes

Seven people, including three children, were killed and seven others injured after a landslide struck Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area early Wednesday following heavy rains, officials said. The tragedy unfolded before dawn as a section of hillside collapsed onto homes in a densely populated settlement.

The landslide was reported at around 3:48 am at Gaushiya Chawl in Ashok Nagar, Chirag Nagar, where soil and debris from the hillside crashed onto two to three houses. The collapse trapped residents and caused significant damage to the structures.

The seven deceased included three children aged between two and 14 years. The victims were identified as Mohammad Samir Ansari, 14, Sahil Husen Abdul Kazi, 19, Aban Arif Shaikh, 2, Manat Arif Shaikh, 4, Marjina Arif Shaikh, 27, Viket Ramesh Yadav, 27, and an unidentified person aged around 45.

Seven injured people were taken to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar and Bhabha Hospital in Kurla for treatment. Their condition was reported to be stable, according to officials.

Rescue operations continued through the day, involving personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), ambulance services and civic ward teams. However, rescuers faced a major challenge because the approach to the affected settlement is extremely narrow, making it difficult to bring heavy machinery close to the debris.

Earlier reports said rescuers were also using specialised victim-detection equipment while searching the debris for survivors.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site and met affected families. She announced Rs 4 lakh in immediate assistance to the next of kin of each deceased person and Rs 50,000 towards the medical treatment of each injured person. She also directed officials to intensify rescue efforts and ensure coordination among agencies.
