Mumbai cricket gets ₹100 crore boost, new Champions Trophy announced
In a significant move aimed at reshaping the future of Mumbai’s cricket ecosystem, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has approved a ₹100 crore subsidy corpus while also announcing the launch of the MCA Champions Trophy , a new tournament designed to strengthen the player pipeline ahead of the T20 Mumbai League.
The decision, taken during the apex council meeting on Saturday, reflects a long-term vision to stabilize and uplift grassroots cricket across the city. The corpus is expected to act as a financial backbone for affiliated clubs, many of which form the foundation of Mumbai’s rich cricketing legacy.
According to the MCA, the fund will play a crucial role in maintaining infrastructure, improving training facilities, and nurturing young talent . Clubs will also be able to enhance their operational efficiency, ensuring they remain competitive and sustainable in an evolving sporting landscape.
“This initiative is about safeguarding the future of the sport at the club level,” the association stated, underlining the importance of strong grassroots systems in producing elite cricketers .
Complementing this financial push is the introduction of the MCA Champions Trophy , an eight-team tournament that will bring together top performers selected from a pool of registered players. Scheduled to begin on April 20 , the competition is envisioned as a high-intensity platform to identify and groom emerging talent.
MCA President Ajinkya Naik emphasized the dual impact of these initiatives. He noted that the corpus would empower clubs with essential resources, while the new tournament would create a structured pathway for players to transition into higher levels of competition .
“The aim is not just to support clubs financially, but to ensure that Mumbai continues to produce top-quality cricketers,” he said, adding that the Champions Trophy will raise the competitive standard ahead of the T20 Mumbai League .
With this twin initiative, the MCA has signaled a clear commitment to both financial sustainability and talent development, reinforcing Mumbai’s position as one of India’s most prolific cricketing hubs.
