India’s artificial intelligence ambitions received a dramatic boost this week after Mukesh Ambani announced a ₹10 lakh crore investment to build AI infrastructure over the next seven years, positioning the country for the transition from the Internet era to the Intelligence Era . Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit, the Reliance Industries chairman said the initiative aims to make AI affordable and accessible at scale echoing the disruptive success of Reliance Jio in transforming connectivity across India.

The investment will focus on building sovereign AI capability , including gigawatt-scale data centres in Jamnagar powered by renewable energy , alongside a nationwide edge computing network integrated with telecom infrastructure to enable low-latency AI services . By combining computing power, connectivity and green energy, Reliance aims to dramatically reduce the cost of intelligence and enable deployment at population scale.

Ambani’s announcement underscores a growing recognition that AI is no longer merely a software layer but critical national infrastructure . He warned that the world risks a divide between nations that control compute and those forced to “rent intelligence,” highlighting the importance of data sovereignty and domestic computing capacity. Analysts note that co-locating facilities with renewable power can significantly reduce operating costs, while strengthening India’s strategic autonomy.

The initiative is designed to deliver AI solutions across sectors from agriculture and healthcare to education and governance while enabling multilingual access and inclusive adoption. Early deployments include tools for adaptive learning, medical guidance and farm productivity, reflecting a broader push to democratise digital intelligence.

The announcement comes amid a surge of investments positioning India as a global AI hub. With nearly a billion internet users, vast data generation and one of the world’s most dynamic startup ecosystems, the country offers unique conditions for large-scale AI deployment.

Yet challenges remain. India continues to depend on imported advanced chips, while execution, regulatory safeguards and sustainable energy use will determine long-term success. If realised, this investment could replicate the telecom revolution transforming AI from an elite resource into a universal utility and positioning India as a leader in inclusive artificial intelligence.
