A group of retired police officers in Madhya Pradesh has protested against alleged misbehaviour by serving policemen with an 82-year-old former deputy superintendent of police and his wife in Panna district, demanding action against the personnel involved.

Girish Subedar , secretary of the Retired Gazetted Police Officers Association, said the incident occurred two days ago when former DSP Bharat Singh Chauhan was travelling with his wife from Panna to Gwalior . During a routine traffic checking drive, police stopped their vehicle after noticing that Chauhan was not wearing a seatbelt , which triggered an argument between the couple and the officers.

The checking operation was being conducted on the Panna-Chhatarpur stretch of National Highway-39 near Madla police station. According to reports, the former officer objected to the challan and allegedly tried to assert his former position during the argument with the police team.

As the confrontation escalated, Chauhan allegedly took out his licensed firearm and threatened the policemen, while his wife also joined the altercation and reportedly pointed the weapon towards the officers during the roadside dispute. The incident created tension at the spot and was later captured on video.

Police subsequently registered a case against the couple for obstructing government duty and under provisions of the Arms Act . They were detained around noon and later produced before a court at about 7 pm , which granted them bail the same day.

Subedar said nearly three dozen retired officers plan to submit a memorandum addressed to the director general of police in Bhopal through the Indore superintendent of police on Monday, seeking action against personnel from Madla police station.

Responding to the controversy, Panna Superintendent of Police Nivedita Naidu said everyone has the right to express their views in a democracy. She added that the incident was recorded on a police body-worn camera and video released publicly , allowing people to form their own opinion about what happened during the confrontation.
