Satendra Singh Lohiya has made history as the first Asian para-swimmer to cross New Zealand’s Cook Strait , a 23.6km stretch of water that separates the country’s North and South Islands . Renowned for its freezing temperatures, strong currents, and unpredictable waves, the Strait is regarded as one of the toughest open-water swims in the world. Lohiya completed the daunting challenge in nine hours and 22 minutes , braving the icy waters and powerful tides every stroke of the way.

The 38-year-old, hailing from Bhind district in Madhya Pradesh , reached New Zealand in the third week of January and underwent intensive training in the Strait’s frigid waters to prepare for this monumental feat.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav congratulated the para-swimmer, saying, “Padma Shri and Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awardee Satendra Singh Lohiya has created history by crossing the Cook Strait. This proud moment reflects his indomitable spirit and unwavering determination, which will continue to inspire generations to come.”

Lohiya’s journey is a testament to resilience. Both of his legs were disabled in infancy due to lack of proper treatment for diarrhea. He began his open-water swimming career in 2017 , undeterred by physical challenges. In 2018, he crossed the English Channel with the Indian para-swimming team, completing the 34km swim in 12 hours and 26 minutes .

A decorated athlete , Lohiya has participated in 11 National Paralympic swimming championships , winning 23 medals , including four golds, 12 silvers, and seven bronzes. On the international stage, he has earned one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal across three championships. In 2022, he clinched the gold in 100m backstroke at the National Paralympic Swimming Championships in Guwahati.

Honoured with the Padma Shri in 2024 for his sporting excellence and perseverance, Lohiya continues to inspire countless aspiring athletes, proving that determination can overcome any obstacle.
