YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) MP Dr Maddir Gurumoorthy has accused the police of failing to protect opposition leaders during the local body election nomination process in Tirupati. He alleged that police personnel allowed ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders and workers to obstruct opposition representatives and demanded that the department function impartially without succumbing to political pressure.

Gurumoorthy said he and YSRCP MLC Sipai Subramanyam faced obstruction when they went to the nomination centre opposite the Tirupati Municipal Corporation office to file nomination papers on behalf of mayoral candidate Vasu Yadav.

According to the MP, hundreds of TDP leaders and workers gathered at the centre, surrounded them and prevented them from proceeding with the nomination process. He alleged that they were told to return without filing the papers, questioning why the police failed to provide protection and ensure that the process could be completed.

The MP further claimed that police officials asked him to produce his Aadhaar card and evidence to establish that he had come to file the nomination. While he was showing the nomination papers, TDP workers allegedly snatched the documents. Gurumoorthy criticised the police for watching the incident without taking effective action.

Questioning the enforcement of election rules, he pointed out that police personnel repeatedly referred to the restriction on gatherings within 100 metres of nomination centres, yet failed to protect an MP and an MLC at the site.

Gurumoorthy said obstructing elected representatives from exercising their democratic rights raised serious concerns about the fairness of the electoral process. He questioned how elections could be conducted freely and impartially if opposition representatives were prevented from filing nominations.

He also alleged that, under the coalition government, the police appeared to be acting in favour of the ruling party rather than functioning as an independent law-enforcement agency. Claiming that YSRCP leaders and workers were facing harassment from the police, he called for equal opportunities for all political parties.

The MP urged the police to discharge their responsibilities strictly according to law, resist pressure from ruling party leaders and ensure a fair and peaceful nomination process.
