In a shocking incident, a woman has been taken into custody for allegedly killing her 18-month-old daughter by throwing her into a drain in Haryana’s Faridabad district, police said on Sunday.

The incident came to light on April 23 when two schoolchildren spotted the child’s body lodged in an iron mesh along a drain near Dheeraj Nagar. The body was later retrieved and sent for postmortem examination.

During the investigation, a Crime Branch team examined CCTV footage from the area, which showed the woman carrying the child towards the drain and returning alone shortly after. Based on the footage, police detained the suspect for questioning.

According to officials, the woman confessed to the crime during interrogation. The postmortem report confirmed that the child died due to drowning.

The accused, identified as Neelam, is a native of Madhubani in Bihar and had been living in Faridabad with her husband, who is employed in a private firm.

Police said the child was the youngest among the couple’s six daughters . During questioning, the woman reportedly cited severe financial hardship as the reason behind her actions, claiming she was unable to support her family.

A senior investigating officer stated that further inquiries are underway to ascertain all aspects of the case. Police spokesperson Yashpal said the investigation is ongoing and more details will emerge soon.
