Monsoon Session Set to Begin Today: Big Bills, NEET Row and Delimitation Fight Set to Explode in Parliament

The Monsoon Session of Parliament begins on Monday , with both the government and the Opposition preparing for what is expected to be an intense and politically charged session. Scheduled to continue until August 13 , the session is likely to witness fierce debates as the Centre seeks to push ahead with key legislation while the Opposition plans to corner the government over several contentious issues.

Ahead of the session, the Centre convened an all-party meeting on Sunday to outline its legislative agenda, while Opposition leaders from both Houses met separately to finalise a coordinated strategy for the weeks ahead.

The government is set to introduce five new Bills and take up two pending legislations . Among the key proposals are the Income-tax (Amendment) Bill and the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill , which seeks to increase the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37 . Other measures include amendments to the Registration of Births and Deaths Act , reforms to the MSME Development Act aimed at promoting trust-based regulation, and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill .

The proposed amendment on national honour seeks to extend legal protection to 'Vande Mataram' , making any deliberate insult to or obstruction of its singing punishable with imprisonment of up to three years , a fine, or both.

The government will also take up the pending Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill , the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill , and the Appropriation Bill for excess grants for 2022-23 . In addition, it is expected to renew efforts to pass the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill relating to women's reservation and delimitation , after it failed to secure passage in the previous session.

The Opposition, however, is preparing an aggressive campaign focusing on the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak , alleged irregularities in donations linked to the Ayodhya Ram Temple , the Special Intensive Revision exercise, inflation, unemployment and other governance issues. The Congress has also sought privilege proceedings against Defence Minister Rajnath Singh over his remarks regarding Operation Sindoor casualties and has opposed any attempt to reintroduce the Delimitation Bill.

Adding to the political complexity, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is expected to decide on the merger claim involving a group of TMC MPs , a move challenged by the Trinamool Congress leadership.

With major legislative proposals, sensitive political issues and coordinated Opposition attacks all expected to dominate proceedings, the Monsoon Session is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched parliamentary sittings of the year.
