MoMA Film Benefit to celebrate Sofia Coppola’s cinematic legacy

Hollywood filmmaker Sofia Coppola, celebrated for films such as The Virgin Suicides and Priscilla , will be honoured at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Film Benefit 2025 in New York. The prestigious event is set to take place on November 12, according to the festival’s official website.

The daughter of legendary filmmakers Francis Ford Coppola and the late Eleanor Coppola, Sofia began her career with an acting debut in the Godfather franchise before transitioning to direction. Her 1999 debut feature The Virgin Suicides established her as a filmmaker to watch, followed by the critically acclaimed Lost in Translation . The latter won her an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and an Oscar nomination for Best Director, making her one of the few women recognized in that category.

This year marks the 17th edition of the MoMA Film Benefit, an annual fundraiser that supports the museum’s Department of Film. Each year, the event honours artists,actors, directors, and writers who have made a lasting impact on cinema. The 2025 edition, presented in association with CHANEL, will include a red carpet, cocktails, a seated dinner, and an award program celebrating Coppola’s achievements.

In its official statement, MoMA praised Coppola’s career, noting: “Sofia has forged a unique path in cinema, characterized by quiet elegance, emotional precision, and a distinctive aesthetic vision. Her contributions as a director, screenwriter, producer, and cultural tastemaker have left an indelible mark on modern cinema.”
