Mohun Bagan Snatch Dramatic Draw Against East Bengal In ISL Derby
The latest edition of the Kolkata derby delivered high drama, emotion and heartbreak as Mohun Bagan Super Giant snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw against arch-rivals East Bengal in the Indian Super League at the packed Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.
Played in front of more than 62,000 fans , the contest carried added emotion following the recent death of former Mohun Bagan president Swapan Sadhan “Tutu” Bose . A minute’s silence was observed before kick-off, while supporters paid tribute with giant posters across the stadium.
The match itself lived up to the occasion. Mohun Bagan dominated possession early and pushed forward through Liston Colaco , Jamie Maclaren and Sahal Abdul Samad , but East Bengal remained dangerous on the counterattack. Both sides created several openings in a frantic first half but failed to find the breakthrough.
East Bengal came closest when Anton Sojberg struck the post after a powerful run, while Bipin Singh wasted another golden opportunity after being denied by a recovering Mohun Bagan defence. At the other end, East Bengal goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill produced a series of impressive saves to frustrate Mohun Bagan’s attackers.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 85th minute when substitute Edmund Lalrindika latched onto a through ball from Miguel Ferreira and calmly slotted past goalkeeper Vishal Kaith . The East Bengal supporters erupted as Edmund celebrated wildly, sensing a historic first ISL derby win over their fierce rivals.
But Mohun Bagan responded immediately. In the 90th minute , Dimitri Petratos delivered a dangerous corner and substitute Jason Cummings rose brilliantly to head home the equaliser.
East Bengal’s frustration deepened when Edmund was sent off in stoppage time, while Gill’s late save denied Maclaren a dramatic winner as the unforgettable derby ended level.
