Mohammad Azharuddin takes charge as Telangana Minister

Former cricketer and Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin on Monday formally assumed office as the Minister for Minority Welfare and Public Enterprises in the Telangana government. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the state secretariat, where Azharuddin took charge in the presence of senior officials and party leaders.

After assuming his new role, Azharuddin said he would immediately focus on key issues affecting the public, particularly those related to welfare and development. “I have already met with department officials, and from tomorrow, we will begin full-fledged work. Our priority will be to identify and resolve pressing public concerns. The government is committed to the welfare of all communities, with a special focus on the upliftment of minorities,” he stated.

Meanwhile, opposition BJP leaders alleged that Azharuddin’s appointment as minister was a politically motivated move ahead of the Jubilee Hills by-election, where polling is scheduled for today and counting will take place on November 14. The bypoll was necessitated following the demise of sitting BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath.

On another note, Azharuddin expressed condolences on the passing of noted poet and lyricist Ande Sri, describing him as “a gifted writer and a passionate voice in the Telangana movement.” “He wasn’t just a poet but a people’s artist who captured the spirit of Telangana through his songs. My heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace,” Azharuddin said.

Ande Sri, 64, was widely known for his powerful folk and patriotic songs that resonated during the Telangana statehood movement, including the iconic anthem “Jaya Jaya Hey Telangana.” He passed away on November 10.
