Mohamed Salah Gets New German Coach At Trabzonspor, Thomas Reis Takes Charge

Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian football star and one of the most recognised forwards of his generation, will have a new German coach at Trabzonspor after the Turkish club appointed Thomas Reis on a two-year contract on Thursday.

Reis joins from Bulgarian club Ludogorets and replaces Fatih Tekke, who resigned last month after Trabzonspor were eliminated from the Europa League.

The German coach said the chance to work with Salah was one of the main attractions of the job. The Egyptian forward joined Trabzonspor this season following a highly successful nine-year spell at Liverpool, where he became one of the club’s leading goalscorers and helped them win major domestic and European trophies.

Salah has made a strong start in Turkey, scoring four goals in five league appearances.

“Working with a player of his caliber is perhaps one of the best things that can happen to a coach,” Reis said in a club statement. He also said he would give Salah “freedom in attack”, allowing the forward greater influence in the final third.

Reis is no stranger to Turkish football. He previously coached Samsunspor, guiding the club to a third-place finish two seasons ago, behind Istanbul giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

“I know this place and I know how intense the games are here,” Reis said.

His arrival comes at an important stage for Trabzonspor, who are currently ninth in the Turkish league after five rounds. The club will also begin its six-match Conference League campaign against Finland’s KuPS Kuopio on October 15.

Trabzonspor last won the Turkish league title in 2022 and will hope Reis can improve the team’s domestic position while making an impact in Europe.
