Modi’s Fuel-Saving Push Triggers Nationwide Convoy Cuts Across BJP States
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has significantly reduced the size of his official convoy during recent domestic visits, following his appeal for lowering fuel consumption and promoting what the government describes as “spending more wisely.”
Official sources clarified that the Prime Minister’s message is not about cutting government spending, but about reducing avoidable fuel use, lowering dependence on imported goods, and minimising foreign-currency-intensive consumption. They stressed that there are no cuts in capital expenditure, welfare schemes, or subsidies.
The convoy reduction was implemented during Modi’s visits to Gujarat and Assam , while maintaining full security standards under the SPG protocol . The move came shortly after his public address in Hyderabad, where he urged citizens to adopt energy-saving practices including greater use of public transport, electric vehicles, rail-based logistics, and work-from-home wherever possible.
Sources also indicated that electric vehicles may be gradually included in official convoys, without any fresh vehicle purchases.
The impact of the Prime Minister’s appeal has now extended beyond the Centre, with several Chief Ministers and senior leaders adopting similar measures across BJP-ruled states.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed an immediate 50% reduction in convoy vehicles and called for wider adoption of the Prime Minister’s message across the administration. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced minimal convoy usage and encouraged public transport for officials.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta imposed restrictions on official vehicles used by ministers and legislators, while Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma ordered strict reduction in convoy size and discouraged unnecessary vehicle deployment.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed that ministers must seek prior approval for official air travel. Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat opted for trains and public transport instead of helicopters and flights, while also reducing convoy size.
Other leaders have also acted: Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi cancelled foreign travel, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary reduced vehicle usage by half, and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced convoy cuts along with increased focus on electric vehicles. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said precautionary measures would be introduced to address global energy concerns.
Himachal Governor Kavinder Gupta declared Lok Bhavan a “fuel conservation zone,” cutting convoy size, reducing helicopter use, and shifting several engagements to video conferencing.
The coordinated measures highlight a broader administrative push inspired by the Prime Minister’s call for efficiency, fuel conservation, and reduced dependency on imports amid global energy uncertainty.
