Prime Minister Narendra Modi became India's longest-serving head of government on Sunday, 22 March 2026, completing 8,931 cumulative days in elected office. The milestone surpasses the previous record of 8,930 days held by former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, who had himself eclipsed the earlier record of West Bengal's Jyoti Basu, 23 years and 137 days as Chief Minister. Modi's tally combines his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat from 7 October 2001 to 21 May 2014, and his ongoing service as Prime Minister since 26 May 2014, marking the entry into his 25th consecutive year in executive leadership.

Modi’s rise from a roadside tea stall in Vadnagar, Gujarat , to India’s highest office is remarkable. Born on 17 September 1950 , he helped his family serve railway passengers, joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in the early 1970s, and entered the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1987, rising to national general secretary by 1995. He became Gujarat’s chief minister in October 2001 , replacing Keshubhai Patel after the Bhuj earthquake , and assumed office amid a super cyclone, droughts, and political instability. He won four consecutive state elections, 2001 by-poll , and 2002, 2007, 2012 assemblies , becoming Gujarat’s longest-serving chief minister . Under his leadership, the state grew from drought-prone and economically strained to a “powerhouse of good governance” , with major gains in agriculture, industry, infrastructure, and investments through Vibrant Gujarat Summits .

Declared BJP’s prime ministerial candidate in 2013, Modi became India’s 14th Prime Minister on 26 May 2014 , the first non-Congress leader with a full Lok Sabha majority and the first born post-Independence. Re-elected in 2019, he led the NDA to 293 seats in 2024, returning for a third term in coalition. On 25 July 2025 , he surpassed Indira Gandhi’s tenure to become India’s longest-serving Prime Minister . His government implemented demonetisation , GST , and liberalised foreign investment. Modi claims over 25 crore lifted from poverty , India as the fourth-largest economy , and continues pursuing a Viksit Bharat guided by constitutional values.

The milestone drew instant Cabinet tributes. Home Minister Amit Shah called it a legacy "rooted in service and unwavering commitment," noting Modi has not taken a holiday in over 24 years. "PM Modi Ji's 8,931 days reflect dedication to nation-first governance, integrity, and tireless service," Shah wrote, adding the Modi era transformed India, securing rights for the poor, setting new development benchmarks, and enhancing global prestige. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called it "a continuous journey of service," while Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya hailed it as "a rare feat of decades-long leadership."

The record Modi surpassed was formidable. Pawan Kumar Chamling , founder of the Sikkim Democratic Front , served as Sikkim’s Chief Minister from 12 December 1994 to 26 May 2019 , over 24 uninterrupted years. Chamling, hailed as India’s "greenest Chief Minister," emphasized sustainable development, organic farming, and inclusive growth, and is also a published poet under the pen name Pawan Chamling Kumar , with works in Nepali, English, and Hindi.

The record comes amid Modi’s remarkable digital reach. In February 2026 , he crossed 100 million Instagram followers , becoming the first serving world leader to do so, now at 101 million. He commands 106.4 million followers on X and 30 million YouTube subscribers , leading all current and former heads of government. In October 2025 , he thanked the nation as he entered his 25th year in public service.

While Modi’s record combines two constitutionally distinct offices, Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister , making direct comparisons with Pawan Chamling contentious, it is celebrated by supporters for six successive electoral mandates and over 24 years of uninterrupted service without a holiday. Critics, however, highlight controversies including the 2002 Gujarat riots , ongoing concerns over press freedom, and allegations of electoral manipulation and institutional bias, citing the Election Commission, CBI, ED , and other agencies as being increasingly aligned with the ruling party. The 2024 general election , where the BJP lost its outright majority and relied on coalition partners, has been interpreted by opponents as a check on such dominance. Proponents argue that the sustained public endorsement reflects a unique combination of political longevity, administrative control, and personal commitment, even amid debates over accountability, democratic norms, and policy outcomes.
