Modi in Arunachal: ₹5,100 crore projects explained

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over ₹5,100 crore in Itanagar, signaling a renewed push for growth and connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh.

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi paid respects to the local deity Donyi Polo and praised the people of Arunachal for their patriotism and warmth. He highlighted that while the state is the first to receive the morning sun, it had long remained on the periphery of India’s development journey due to past neglect. “Earlier governments considered Arunachal, with its small population and just two Lok Sabha seats, as less significant. This approach delayed the region’s progress for decades,” he noted.

PM Modi launched the following projects:

• Hydropower projects: He laid the foundation for Heo Hydro Electric Project (240 MW) and Tato-I Hydro Electric Project (186 MW), with a combined investment of over ₹3,700 crore. These projects aim to increase electricity production in the state.

• Convention Center at Tawang: A state-of-the-art facility located at over 9,820 feet, meant to host national and international conferences, cultural festivals, and exhibitions.

• Other infrastructure projects: Investments worth ₹1,290 crore across sectors like connectivity, healthcare, fire safety, and working women’s hostels to improve local quality of life and economic opportunities.

The timing of the visit was symbolic. Coinciding with the first day of Navratri, Modi linked development announcements to cultural celebrations, underscoring the government’s focus on both prosperity and national pride. He also used the occasion to launch next-generation GST reforms and the GST Savings Festival, emphasizing double benefits for citizens during the festive season.

PM Modi stressed that post-2014, the Northeast has become central to the government’s development agenda. He underlined the principle of “Nation First” and “Nagarik Devobhava”, emphasizing that governance should prioritize long-term development over political calculations. The projects unveiled today aim to harness Arunachal Pradesh’s natural resources, improve last-mile connectivity, and provide modern infrastructure to ensure inclusive growth.
