Modi ignites Assam’s billion-dollar leap

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day visit to Assam this weekend, combining cultural homage with major economic initiatives. The visit will pay tribute to Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, marking his birth centenary with a commemorative Rs 100 coin, a biography release, and an 18-minute musical medley performed by 1,200 artists, a celebration that blends Assam’s cultural pride with national recognition.

Beyond the festivities, the visit is strategically significant for Assam’s growth trajectory. Modi will lay the foundation for the Darrang Medical College, a nursing school, and a GNM school, projects worth Rs 567 crore, signaling a robust push in healthcare infrastructure. The improvements aim to strengthen medical education and provide quality health services to northern Assam and nearby regions. Infrastructure development also takes centre stage: the Narengi-Kuruwa bridge and Guwahati Ring Road projects, with a combined cost of Rs 7,000 crore, are designed to enhance connectivity between Kamrup, Darrang, and Ri Bhoi in Meghalaya, promising smoother transport, reduced travel time, and increased regional trade.

Energy and industrial growth form another pillar of Modi’s agenda. At Numaligarh refinery in Golaghat, the PM will inaugurate a bamboo-based ethanol plant worth over Rs 5,000 crore and lay the foundation for the Petro Fluidised Catalytic Cracker Unit, a Rs 7,000 crore investment expected to produce 360 KTPA of propylene. These initiatives aim to bolster the local economy, expand the plastic value chain, and create employment opportunities.

The visit also carries symbolic gestures, such as the “PM Neem Corridor,” a 2.2-km stretch planted with neem trees leading to the Numaligarh rally venue, reflecting an intertwining of environmental consciousness with development symbolism. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ensured meticulous preparations, emphasizing security, smooth execution, and community engagement.

Modi’s Assam visit highlights a multi-dimensional approach to development: cultural tribute, educational empowerment, infrastructure connectivity, and industrial growth. By combining symbolic gestures with billion-dollar projects, the visit not only celebrates Assam’s heritage but also accelerates its economic leap, positioning the state as a hub of opportunity and innovation in Northeast India.
