Mob Attacks Assam Rifles Camp in Manipur, Torches Vehicles After Search Operation

A late-night mob attack on an Assam Rifles camp in Manipur's Senapati district left security vehicles damaged and set ablaze after tensions escalated following a search operation carried out by the paramilitary force.

According to officials, the violence unfolded around 9.30 pm on Tuesday at the Assam Rifles camp in Naga Taphou , where a large crowd allegedly hurled stones, vandalised property and attempted acts of arson. During the attack, one light vehicle was burnt , two trucks were overturned and damaged , while a civilian's car was also destroyed in the violence.

The unrest followed a search operation launched earlier in the day based on credible intelligence inputs about the presence of armed cadres in the Makuilongdi area, about 2 km west of the designated NSCN (IM) camp at Oklong .

The Defence PRO said intelligence reports and social media posts had indicated that armed cadres were moving outside designated camps while carrying weapons and wearing uniforms, an alleged violation of the existing Ceasefire Ground Rules . The matter was subsequently reported to the Ceasefire Monitoring Group ( CFMG) .

During the operation, Assam Rifles personnel entered the Makuilongdi and Oklong areas, where they were reportedly obstructed by local residents, including women. As tensions mounted, reports emerged of a large crowd assembling in Senapati town and preparing to march towards the Assam Rifles camp.

Although the search teams later withdrew, the crowd reached the camp and launched the attack. In coordination with the Manipur Police , security forces used minimum force to disperse the mob and prevent the situation from escalating further. Additional personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Senapati Police were deployed to restore order.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, and security has been strengthened in the area following the incident.
