Mizoram receives first rail-carried cars, boosting connectivity and economy

In a historic first for Mizoram, 119 Maruti cars were delivered directly to Sairang Railway Station by rail , marking the state’s debut in rail-based automobile transport. The movement of vehicles by train is expected to improve availability in Aizawl, reduce dependence on long and costly road transport, and benefit dealers, service providers, and customers , signaling a major step forward in Mizoram’s infrastructure and economic growth.

The cars arrived via the Bairabi-Sairang railway line , a 51.38 km route through hilly terrain featuring 45 tunnels , which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 September 2025. The inauguration also saw the flagging off of three new trains connecting Sairang with Delhi, Guwahati, and Kolkata. Early passenger response has been overwhelmingly positive, with occupancy rates of 147% on the Rajdhani Express to Delhi, 115% on the Mizoram Express to Guwahati, and 139% on the Express to Kolkata , reflecting strong demand for faster, convenient, and cost-effective travel.

Freight operations on the line have already begun, carrying cement, construction materials, automobiles, sand, and stone chips , along with parcel consignments like Anthurium flowers to Anand Vihar Terminal. The first automobile consignment demonstrates the railway’s growing role as a reliable logistics corridor , reducing transport costs and supporting businesses in the state.

Before this, Mizoram’s transport system relied almost entirely on road networks , which were slow, costly, and affected by monsoon landslides and narrow hilly roads. Air transport was limited and expensive, making delivery of vehicles and bulk goods challenging. Personally owned vehicles were expensive and in short supply, with delays in deliveries and limited choices for buyers. The new railway line addresses these issues, enabling faster, cheaper, and more reliable movement of goods and vehicles , while expanding options for local consumers.
