Mizoram Drug Seizures Top Rs 77 Crore in September, Six Myanmar Nationals Held
The Mizoram Police seized narcotics worth Rs 77.15 crore and arrested 29 people, including six Myanmar nationals, during September, officials said on Monday.
According to a statement issued by the state police, the seizures comprised 78.75 kg of methamphetamine valued at Rs 62.99 crore, 8.11 kg of morphine worth Rs 8.11 crore and 2.92 kg of heroin valued at Rs 5.84 crore. Methamphetamine accounted for the largest share of the total seizure, both in terms of quantity and estimated value, the statement said.
The 29 people arrested in connection with the cases included six Myanmar nationals. Several of the accused were identified as residents of Manipur and Myanmar, police said, without providing further details about the individual cases or the circumstances of the arrests.
The police described the seizures as part of their continuing efforts to tackle the drug menace in the northeastern state. “The seizures reflect our sustained efforts to combat the drug menace,” the police statement said, underlining the need to intensify the fight against narcotics.
Mizoram, which shares an international border with Myanmar, has been a focus of anti-narcotics operations. The latest figures highlight the scale of drug seizures made by the state police during the month.
The police also appealed to residents to cooperate with the government and local organisations in efforts to curb drug trafficking. They urged people to share information about the movement and distribution of illegal narcotics with the authorities.
The statement specifically called for cooperation with village councils, the Young Mizo Association (YMA) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to strengthen efforts against the drug trade. Police said public participation and information-sharing were important in addressing the problem and supporting enforcement measures.
The authorities stressed that the campaign against narcotics needed to be intensified, calling for continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies, community organisations and residents. The police did not disclose further details about the cases or the identities of those arrested in the statement.
