In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department seized over 10 kilograms of methamphetamine and arrested four individuals , including a Myanmar national , during an operation in Aizawl, officials said on Thursday.

Acting on a specific intelligence input , enforcement teams carried out a raid near Folkland Park on Wednesday, recovering 10.02 kg of methamphetamine , estimated to be around one lakh tablets . The drug, commonly referred to as “crazy drug” , is a highly addictive stimulant banned under Indian law.

According to department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga , the arrested individuals include two residents from Karimganj in Assam and one Myanmar national , pointing to the cross-border dimensions of the case. The accused have been booked under Section 21(c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 , which deals with commercial quantities of prohibited substances. They were produced before a court in Aizawl on Thursday.

Officials say the seizure underscores the growing challenge posed by the northeastern drug trafficking corridor , particularly routes linking Myanmar to India through Mizoram and Manipur . The region lies close to the notorious Golden Triangle, a major global hub for synthetic and opium-based drugs, making it vulnerable to smuggling networks.

Security agencies have flagged that porous borders, difficult terrain, and established informal trade routes are often exploited by traffickers to move drugs into mainland India. Methamphetamine tablets, in particular, are increasingly trafficked due to their high demand and ease of transport.

The latest operation is part of an intensified enforcement drive in the state. Since January, the Excise Department has seized 7.24 kg of heroin , 49.39 kg of methamphetamine , and 90.83 kg of ganja , along with other narcotics.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to tightening surveillance and inter-agency coordination to disrupt the flow of drugs through the region, even as concerns grow over the expanding reach of cross-border narcotics networks.
