Mir Yar Baloch Questions Australia’s Move to Sanction BLA, Calls It Political Pressure

A senior leader of the Baloch nationalist movement, Mir Yar Baloch , has challenged the Australia government over its recent decision to impose counter-terrorism financing sanctions on the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), asking it to present evidence of any attacks on Australian interests.

Australia last week designated the BLA , describing it as a group involved in “terrorist attacks” and imposed financial sanctions aimed at curbing its operations. The move has drawn criticism from Baloch activists, who allege that the decision reflects lobbying efforts by Pakistan and a lack of understanding of the ground situation in Balochistan.

Mir Yar Baloch told PTI that the designation ignores what he called the political and human rights dimensions of the Baloch issue. He urged global actors, including India, to establish formal diplomatic and economic engagement with what he termed the “Baloch nation,” and even called for international recognition of Baloch institutions , including passports and currency.

He also alleged widespread military operations in Balochistan, describing the situation as a systematic campaign against Baloch identity, language and resources . These claims could not be independently verified.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) is one of the most prominent insurgent groups in Balochistan and has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks targeting Pakistani security forces and infrastructure. It is designated as a terrorist organisation by several countries due to its involvement in armed violence.

On India’s position, New Delhi has consistently denied any operational support or involvement with the BLA, rejecting Pakistan’s allegations linking it to separatist movements in Balochistan. India has also not publicly designated the group as a terrorist organisation.

The issue continues to reflect the broader geopolitical tensions and competing narratives surrounding the long-running insurgency in Balochistan.
