Minister Nara Lokesh pledges support to revive Rural Development Trust

In a significant development for rural empowerment, Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Education and IT, Nara Lokesh, met with Manchô Ferrer, a key representative of the Rural Development Trust (RDT), on Sunday. Founded in 1992 by Spanish missionary Vicente Ferrer and his wife Anna Ferrer, RDT has been a beacon of hope for marginalized communities in Anantapur and beyond for over three decades. With a mission to provide education, healthcare, and vocational training, the trust has touched the lives of over a million individuals. However, since mid-2024, RDT has grappled with operational setbacks due to funding cuts and stringent Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) compliance requirements, leading to a partial suspension of its services.

Minister Lokesh assured Ferrer that the state government would take decisive action to address these issues permanently. “We have already engaged with the central government, and the state will extend full support to ensure RDT services continue uninterrupted,” Lokesh stated, a promise that has raised hopes among local beneficiaries. The meeting follows a series of appeals from community leaders in 2024, who highlighted the trust’s critical role in delivering free medical camps and skill development programs.

RDT’s management has been proactive in its revival efforts, renegotiating international partnerships and seeking governmental aid. The trust’s recent public campaign and detailed proposals to the state government have set the stage for this collaboration. Lokesh’s involvement, bolstered by his 2024 legislative win in Mangalagiri that enhanced his rural development influence, could unlock new funding streams and regulatory relief.

For the people of Anantapur, this partnership signals a potential restoration of essential services. “RDT has been our lifeline for years. This support from the minister gives us hope,” said Lakshmi, a local beneficiary. As the state and RDT align their goals, the trust’s legacy of innovation evidenced by its 2019 Kalam Centre Innovation Award may find new momentum, promising a brighter future for rural Andhra Pradesh.
