Minister Komatireddy reviews traffic arrangements on highways ahead of Sankranti

Ahead of the Sankranti festival, the government is taking measures to ensure smooth travel for people returning to their hometowns. Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy held a high-level review meeting with officials to discuss traffic management and safety measures on national highways during the festive period.

The minister highlighted the importance of proactive planning based on past experiences. He warned that traffic on major routes, particularly the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway, is expected to surge from January 8, with around one lakh vehicles traveling daily. He instructed all departments to remain alert and take necessary measures so that travelers do not face long delays.

During the meeting, Minister Komatireddy emphasized that all lanes on highways should remain fully operational during peak traffic days. He directed that construction and repair work blocking lanes be suspended during the festival. Additional traffic police deployment, clear signage, and high-visibility barricades should be put in place at key points to manage congestion effectively.

Officials were also instructed to ensure that no arrangements create confusion on busy junctions, toll plazas, or other critical areas. Coordination with local traffic police for diversions and traffic control is mandatory, and all departments must follow police directives closely.

The government aims to take full responsibility for traffic management during the festival, ensuring the safety and convenience of travelers. Minister Komatireddy reviewed current traffic conditions with officials and suggested adjustments to tackle any potential issues immediately. With these measures, the government is committed to ensuring that highways remain congestion-free and that festival-goers reach their destinations safely and comfortably.

On the occasion of the Sankranti festival, Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy wrote to Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, requesting that vehicles be allowed to travel on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway without paying toll fees.

The request asked for toll-free travel from Hyderabad to Vijayawada between January 9 and 14, and from Vijayawada to Hyderabad between January 16 and 18.

According to toll data, traffic on this highway is expected to increase up to 200% above normal during the festival, especially around Pantangi, Korlapahad, and Chilakaluripet.

These measures aim to make travel easier for commuters, reduce waiting times, and help manage traffic more smoothly. The Telangana government has said it will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and convenience of travelers during the festival.
