Minister assess Musi flood damage

Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar conducted an on-ground inspection of flood-affected regions in Hyderabad, including Chadar Ghat, MG Bus Station (MGBS), and Malakpet. The recent heavy rains caused the Musi River to swell, and the release of water from upstream reservoirs further worsened the situation.

Chadar Ghat Bridge Condition

The Chadar Ghat Bridge was submerged in floodwaters. Minister Ponnam, accompanied by officials, assessed the damage and instructed police to restrict public access for safety. He emphasized that the bridge’s side walls had suffered damage and ordered it remain closed until repairs are complete.

Relief and Rehabilitation Efforts

Several colonies along the Musi floodplain were inundated. The minister directed immediate relocation of affected residents to relief centers and personally inspected the Malakpet center to ensure accommodation, food, and medical support were being provided.

Impact on MGBS and Public Transport

Flooding at the MGBS disrupted services and stranded passengers. Minister Ponnam directed RTC officials to divert buses temporarily and ensure clear communication of the changes. He urged the public to stay cautious and avoid unnecessary travel in flood-hit areas.

Opposition Response

BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) criticized the Congress-led state government, accusing Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy of negligence. He alleged that failure to release water from Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs worsened the floods and called the Musi Riverfront Development Project a “cover for corruption.”

KTR demanded substantial compensation for flood victims — ₹25 lakh for each life lost, ₹25,000 per acre for crop damage, and construction of Indiramma houses for those who lost homes.

While Minister Ponnam Prabhakar emphasized immediate relief and rehabilitation, the opposition’s focus remained on accountability and government preparedness, underlining the political tussle over disaster management in Telangana.
