Mild Earthquake Tremors Felt in Visakhapatnam After Offshore Quake in Bay of Bengal

Residents in several parts of Visakhapatnam experienced mild tremors early Sunday morning following an earthquake that struck the Bay of Bengal off the Andhra Pradesh coast.

According to information released by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) , the earthquake occurred at 5:05:46 a.m. and registered a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale .

Officials said the epicentre was located in the Bay of Bengal, approximately 225 kilometres off the Kakinada coast . The quake originated at a depth of around 10 kilometres below the Earth's surface .

The tremors were felt in several neighbourhoods of Visakhapatnam, including Sagar Nagar, Tatichettlapalem, Seethammadhara, Madhavadhara, Peda Waltair, East Point Colony, and HB Colony . Residents reported brief shaking, though the intensity was low and lasted only a short duration.

Authorities confirmed that the earthquake did not cause any loss of life, injuries, or damage to property . Emergency and local administration officials monitored the situation and found no reports of any adverse impact.

With the tremors remaining mild, there was no significant panic among residents, and normal activity continued across the city. Officials noted that the situation remained stable and under observation, while reassuring the public that there was no immediate cause for concern.

The event serves as a reminder that offshore seismic activity in the Bay of Bengal can occasionally be felt along the eastern coastline, particularly in coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. However, Sunday's earthquake was classified as a moderate offshore seismic event with minimal impact on populated areas.
