Migrant Labourer Beaten to Death by Mob in Tamil Nadu Over Alleged Misconduct
A 35-year-old migrant labourer from Assam , identified as Prosenjit Das , was beaten to death by a mob in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district , after an alleged incident of misbehaviour with a woman, police said on Saturday. A case has been registered and a detailed investigation is underway into the circumstances leading to the violence.
According to preliminary findings, Das had travelled to Thiruvallur along with six other workers from Assam in search of employment and was staying in a rented accommodation. Police said he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he went to a woman’s residence under the pretext of asking for drinking water.
He is suspected to have misbehaved with the woman , who immediately shut the door and alerted others for safety. The situation escalated further when Das allegedly returned holding a knife and began damaging windows of the house, prompting the woman to alert her relatives.
Soon after, family members and local residents gathered at the spot. What began as an attempt to confront the situation reportedly turned into a violent mob assault . Das was allegedly attacked by the group and sustained severe injuries.
He was rushed for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries, police said. Officials confirmed that the exact sequence of events is being reconstructed and statements from witnesses are being recorded.
Sources indicate that multiple angles are being examined, including the role of locals involved in the assault and whether the response crossed the limits of self-defence.
The incident has once again drawn attention to concerns over mob justice and violence involving migrant workers in parts of Tamil Nadu , particularly in cases triggered by allegations of personal misconduct or rumours.
