Midnight NH-16 Crash in Vizianagaram Kills Four After Speeding Car Hits Pedestrians
A midnight road accident on National Highway–16 near Perapuram Junction in Pusapatirega mandal of Vizianagaram district claimed four lives and left others injured, highlighting the dangers of overspeeding and negligent driving . The incident occurred shortly after midnight when a car travelling from Srikakulam to Visakhapatnam at an alleged speed of over 140 kmph went out of control. The vehicle first rammed into two pedestrians who had stepped onto the road, killing them instantly due to the severe impact , with one victim reportedly thrown nearly 30 metres away.
The car did not stop after the initial collision and continued forward before crashing into the rear of a stationary lorry , resulting in a double-impact crash . The force of the collision completely mangled the car, killing two occupants , including the driver, on the spot. Another passenger sustained critical injuries and was shifted to a hospital for treatment, while the lorry driver also suffered injuries in the incident. One of the deceased has been identified as Srinivas , an irrigation contractor from Visakhapatnam .
Police teams rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations, while District Superintendent of Police A.R. Damodar inspected the accident site. Preliminary findings indicate that overspeeding and lack of control were the primary causes. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway. The tragic crash has once again raised concerns over safety on the busy NH-16 corridor , where high speeds, poor night visibility, and pedestrian movement near junctions continue to pose serious risks.
