Middle East war, day 23: Trump’s 48-hour ultimatum begins

Donald Trump, posting on Truth Social late Saturday, gave Iran 48 hours to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz - or face the obliteration of its power plants, beginning with the largest. He wrote in the kind of language that has historically preceded the worst of what nations do to one another. Tehran answered with equal fury, vowing to irreversibly destroy energy infrastructure across the entire Middle East if a single Iranian power plant was touched. Two nuclear-armed allies and a revolutionary Islamic republic are now staring at each other across a 48-hour clock, and the world is watching with a mixture of dread and disbelief.

Trump claimed the US is "weeks ahead of schedule" in what the Pentagon calls Operation Epic Fury , the joint US-Israeli campaign against Iran . He declared Iran’s leadership “gone,” its navy and air force “dead,” and reiterated that Washington seeks no deal . The numbers appear to back him: US Central Command reports 8,000 Iranian targets struck since the war began, and Iranian missile and drone attacks are down 90 percent . Apache helicopters and A-10 Warthogs , usually deployed only when enemy air defenses are weakened, are now active over Iranian territory, signaling Washington’s confidence in Iran’s degraded defenses. Admiral Brad Cooper confirmed multiple 5,000-pound bombs hit a coastal facility storing cruise and mobile missiles , striking at Tehran’s ability to threaten the Strait of Hormuz .

Yet Iran retains the capacity to inflict pain. Missiles breached Israel’s air defenses , hitting Arad and Dimona , near the Negev Nuclear Research Centre . Around 180 were wounded , buildings damaged, and streets littered with debris. The IRGC claimed strikes across Arad, Dimona, Eilat, Beersheba, and Kiryat Gat , reporting 200 casualties ; Israel reported none . The IAEA confirmed no damage to the nuclear centre. Israel’s air defense admitted failures to intercept some missiles, revealing cracks in its technological shield. Netanyahu visited the affected areas, condemned Iran’s attacks as mass murder , and vowed to pursue senior IRGC commanders . Schools closed , public gatherings restricted, and the nation braced for further strikes.

Nuclear tensions escalated. Iran confirmed strikes on Natanz , which the IAEA reported caused no radioactive leakage . Russia condemned the attack but reportedly aided Iran’s drone operations . The White House reaffirmed preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons as a core objective. Iran fired near Israel’s nuclear facility , and claimed interceptions of US-Israeli drones and an Israeli fighter jet . Israel struck over 200 sites across Iran and Lebanon , including missile launchers and air defenses .

Inside Iran , the humanitarian crisis deepens: 1,500 dead, over 20,000 injured , hospitals evacuated, and 81,000 civilian sites damaged . Essential infrastructure, including water treatment and health centers , is severely affected. Iran arrested 25 people for documenting destruction. Diplomatically, Iran sought BRICS support and proposed a regional security framework . Japan secured the release of a detained national, while multiple nations condemned Iran’s Strait of Hormuz actions . Over 3,000 vessels remain stranded in the Gulf, creating a maritime crisis, with the IEA warning of unprecedented global oil disruption .

The wider region is engaged. Hezbollah fired at Israeli forces , US bases in Iraq faced 21 attacks in 24 hours , and Gulf states intercepted dozens of missiles and drones . Domestically, Israel arrested an Iron Dome reservist for allegedly leaking sensitive information. In Washington , Congress presses for a coherent exit strategy , highlighting doubts about the war’s trajectory and ultimate objectives.

The 48-hour clock is running. Iran has promised to burn the Middle East's energy infrastructure if its power plants are touched.
