Middle East war day 2: Who is winning?

Day 2 of the war in West Asia is escalating into a multi-front crisis. Iran is retaliating hard, firing dozens of missiles at Israel and Arab cities, while Israeli jets strike deep into western and central Iran, including Tehran, targeting military installations and leaders. On Day 1, Iran focused on Gulf states Bahrain, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia hitting 27 US bases, damaging an oil tanker off Musandam, striking a commercial port in Oman, and causing dozens of casualties.

On Day 2, its attacks shifted to Israel, hitting 40 buildings; some missiles were intercepted, others landed. Iran also targeted US bases, with three soldiers killed and five injured , and claimed a strike on the USS Abraham Lincoln with four missiles , which the US said was safe.

Inside Iran, over 200 people have died , including 100 girls at a school , while in Israel nine civilians are dead and dozens injured. Despite losing its supreme leader and command figures , Tehran has shown no sign of backing down , with a temporary leadership council filling the vacuum as missiles continue to launch.

Riyadh is furious after Iranian missiles struck Saudi territory and its Eastern Province , calling them “blatant and cowardly attacks that were repelled” and warning it “reserves the right to defend its security, territory, citizens, and residents, including the option to respond.” Saudi diplomats summoned the Iranian ambassador and hinted that if the war prolongs, Saudi Arabia may join the conflict directly . Social media speculation suggests Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman privately urged Washington to strike Iran , a double standard reflecting the longstanding Saudi-Iran rivalry : publicly advocating peace while secretly pushing for military action.

The war has entered a narrative phase : Iran’s missiles continue to fly , Israel’s strikes expand strategically , and some Iranian missiles explode mid-launch. Claude AI and intelligence tools reportedly track missile launches, troop movements, and social media sentiment in real time.

Trump has warned Iran via Truth Social of “a force never seen before,” called for regime change , and urged Iranians to rise. Inside Iran, celebrations broke out over Khamenei’s death , but security forces opened fire , tearing down monuments as the country fractured.

The question for Day 3 and the days that follow, is whether this war finds a ceiling or keeps escalating. Can the Gulf states absorb this kind of pressure without being pulled in? Will Iran find a unified command structure to continue its retaliation? And most critically, is there anyone left in Tehran that Washington can talk to?
