Middle East Conflict Widens: Israel Strikes Lebanon as Houthis Target Yemen Port

The Middle East conflict is widening across Lebanon, Yemen and Gulf shipping routes, showing how Iran’s confrontation with Israel, the United States and allies is spilling across borders.

In southern Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 11 people and wounded 19 on August 15, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. One strike hit a home in Ansar, killing seven, including three children, while another struck Deir al-Zahrani. Israel said it was responding to Hezbollah attacks that seriously wounded three Israeli soldiers and said it had killed a Hezbollah commander and other militants. Israel maintained civilians were not the intended targets, while Lebanese officials condemned the strikes as a dangerous escalation undermining the June truce and efforts toward Hezbollah’s disarmament and an Israeli withdrawal.

In Yemen, the Iran-backed Houthis intensified attacks around the Red Sea port of Mokha. Yemen’s port director said more than 25 missiles struck the port over several days, killing seven people and causing an estimated $16 million in damage. Commercial and maritime operations were subsequently suspended. The escalation has also threatened shipping lanes and the Bab el-Mandeb, a gateway linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

Confrontation is simultaneously affecting the Strait of Hormuz. The United Arab Emirates accused Iran of attacking an ADNOC-operated vessel while transiting the waterway on August 14. No injuries were reported. The UAE described the incident as a threat to freedom of navigation and global energy security. It was reportedly the third attack involving ADNOC vessels within a week.

Together, these developments show how the conflict is creating pressure on two maritime chokepoints: Hormuz, crucial for Gulf oil and gas exports, and Bab el-Mandeb, essential for Red Sea trade. Disruptions can raise insurance and freight costs, delay cargoes and threaten energy supplies.
